What is a “Buddy”
July 30, 2014
To some people a buddy is a friend, a family member, or even a pet. At PKM, the word “buddy” has a slightly different meaning. PKM has a fantastic “buddy system” in which each new staff member or intern is matched up with a current staff member who becomes somewhat of a mentor to him or her. Your buddy becomes someone that you can go to with any and all of your questions, no matter how trivial you think they might be, as well as someone that you can do activities with outside of work.
When I started my internship at the beginning of this summer, everyone at PKM was more than welcoming. However as a new intern, I think that it is only natural to be nervous during the first few weeks of your internship. PKM’s buddy system helped alleviate some of the nervousness that I felt at the beginning of the summer. For example, I was welcomed to PKM on my first day by my buddy who had already decorated my desk and prepared a welcome basket for me that was full of office supplies, snacks, and other goodies. Throughout the duration of my internship, my buddy and I went to several lunches, got coffee during the day, and took a cooking class one night after work. These “buddy outings” gave me an opportunity to get to know my buddy outside of work, helped me feel less nervous during my internship, and provided me with an opportunity to learn more about the culture at PKM.
