Recruiting Tips 101

Recruiting can be a very exciting but also a very challenging time. It’s fun to experience so many firms ‘wooing’ you and trying to win you and what you have to offer over, but it’s easy to lose yourself in the whole process. The best advice I received during recruiting was to just be yourself! I know this is nothing new, but it is so important. Take the time to find out what you value most in an employer, whether it is flexibility, international opportunities or the culture. Once you are able to identify those things, you can focus your time and energy more efficiently on getting to know the firms that offer exactly what you are looking for.
For me, the people and the culture were most important. I knew I would be spending a lot of my time during the week with the same people and even after hours getting to know them as friends, so I didn’t want to be somewhere where I didn’t look forward to that time spent together. There is no question that the people at PKM, from staff to partner, truly care about each other. Beyond the idea of having friends as coworkers, having a more intimate culture allows the seniors and managers to learn my needs as a staff and how best to teach me and develop my skill set. I know that my firm appreciates me by the way they patiently invest in my career growth and challenge me as an individual instead of treating me like a number from the graduate line up. By knowing myself, and figuring out early on in the recruiting process what I needed in order to be the most successful, I was able to choose a firm that was the right fit for me.
