PKM Internship Tips
July 21, 2016
In just two weeks, the internship I’ve looked forward to since October will be coming to a close. These eight weeks have been nothing short of amazing! I have learned so much and created so many bonds with everyone here at PKM. Everyone has been so welcoming and comforting and I honestly can’t thank them all enough. Over these past few weeks, there are so many things that I have learned and I decided to share a few tips that I think can be useful.
Tip #1: Take Notes
When you first begin working on an engagement for the week, I always find it useful to take notes on tasks that the in-charge wants you to complete as well as any explanations they give on how to complete these tasks. I am one of those people who have to write everything down so that I can go back and look over something that may be a little confusing. 9 times out of 10 times, I have the answers to my question written down somewhere.
Tip #2: Ask Questions!
When I first came in, I had no idea what I was doing. I was hesitant to ask questions, afraid that I would ask a stupid question or annoy whoever I was working with. However, everyone encouraged me to ask questions because they understood that none of us interns knew what was going on. One of the things that I did to make me feel more comfortable with asking questions is write all of them down and then ask whoever I was working with to let me know when they were free for me to ask questions. That way, I didn’t feel like I was bombarding them with questions every minute, but was still able to get the information I needed.
Tip #3: Take time to understand what you’re working on
It’s easy to just follow the steps and get the work done, but actually understanding the reasoning behind why you are doing something will be extremely beneficial in the long run. A lot of the engagements you may work on can be similar and if you have an idea of what the concepts behind the procedures are, you will be in great shape.
Tip #4: Enjoy the experience
The internship will fly by (Trust me! I can’t believe I only have two weeks left!). Make sure you make the most of each week that you have.
