From Statesboro to Atlanta
May 16, 2017
This time three years ago, I had just finished my sophomore year at Georgia Southern University, and it hadn’t yet crossed my mind that I needed to start making plans as to what I would do after I graduated college. Up until that point, I had not given any thought about if I would be moving back to my hometown (a small, small town in southeast Georgia) or if I’d decide to venture off to a new place. After all, I had no experience living in a big city, as I went to college in Statesboro, another small town. Little did I know that I would end up getting an internship with one of the best accounting firms in Atlanta (in my opinion, of course) which would eventually help me decide that I did need to adventure to the “big city”.
I was lucky enough to get that internship with PKM the summer between my junior and senior years at Georgia Southern. During that time, I learned about so many aspects of public accounting and all about the city of Atlanta. I also learned a lot about PKM and all of the people that make up the firm. Being away from home didn’t really feel like being away from home when I was surrounded by people who I enjoyed working with every day. It also helped that I was in a city that kept me really busy. At the end of my internship, I accepted a full-time offer with PKM to start work when I finished my undergraduate and masters programs.
Fast forward to now; I have been with PKM with almost half a year now, and I survived my first busy season. I have learned more than I ever thought I could in such a short amount of time. Choosing to move to Atlanta and be a part of PKM was definitely a great decision for my life and career.
