Finding the Right Fit
November 12, 2014
No matter what career you decide on you will spend a lot of your time working. A lot! Check out the chart below from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. See that big chunk at the bottom. That’s your working life, occupying more than a third of your time Monday through Friday, 8.7 hours a day.
This is not meant to scare you, but to make you think about what you truly value in a career. How do you want to spend your time? And who do you want to spend that time with? For most if not all of you reading this blog, you have decided to pursue some sort of career in public accounting be it tax, audit, or systems. As you already know, during busy season that green slice will grow even bigger…
What I am really driving at is this, find somewhere you’ll be happy to work, a place with a culture that meshes with you. Do something you enjoy. And work somewhere where you will be around people you enjoy.
PKM has been picked as one of the Best Firms to Work by Accounting Today for seven years running! It’s a firm filled with great people. It’s a smaller group with a close knit culture. When I was interviewed, I was asked this question, though I’m paraphrasing in a mouth washed out with soap kind of way. Are you a jerk? Because we’re a small group, we spend a lot of time together, and we can’t afford to have a jerk on the team. I liked that question, and it was true. We are a small group, and we spend a lot time together. If there were a jerk on the team those 8.7 hours a day would feel a lot longer! Thankfully, there’s not.
