Before starting with PKM, I worked as a tax accountant for about three years or so – the first two years with a Big Four accounting firm, and one year with a “private industry” company in their tax department. It didn’t take very long for me to realize that, while the private industry job provided great work-life balance, I wasn’t receiving the opportunities to learn and challenge myself that I wanted. Eventually I decided my place was back in public accounting, but I wanted to explore opportunities with a local CPA firm.
It was a mix of perfect timing, networking and a little bit of luck that earned me the opportunity to work at PKM. I thought I had a pretty good idea of what I was getting myself into – long hours, late nights and challenging work, all staples of public accounting life. To add to the complexity of the situation, my wife and I were expecting our first child soon and I knew I would have to work extra hard to maintain the work-life balance that I needed. What I didn’t know, however, was how supportive the culture at PKM would be for me and my family while overcoming the challenges of starting a new job. My new team welcomed me with smiles and words of encouragement and I quickly found myself surrounded by close friends and colleagues. Everyone at PKM is interested in each other’s interests and goals (especially the partners), and everyone does their best to help solve problems together. I constantly find myself discussing client issues with partners, managers and staff one minute, and then talking to them about their interests and/or weekend plans the next. PKM’s office culture is very unique – I don’t think there’s any other company like it.
Looks like I survived another busy season while growing my own family… and I managed to find a work family along the way!
